Our History
In the year 2011, a small group of highly determined students approached the institute to form a team that would
compete in the international Formula Student competitions. They wished to bring together young talented engineers
from different disciplines, with a shared passion of automotive design and engineering, who would dedicate an entire
year towards developing a single seater formula car worthy of representing the institute and the country in a field
comprising of the best engineering students from around the world. Hence, Raftar Formula Racing was born in 2011,
under the umbrella of the Auto Club at the Centre of Innovation, an alumni-driven initiative to promote student
projects.
We are today a team of nearly 40 young engineers seeking to apply and test our technical knowledge at the highest
level. In Formula Student competitions, we compete with the best engineers from around the world in terms of our
technical prowess and business acumen. Competition presents an end-to-end learning experience and all-round
growth opportunity for budding engineers and professionals.
Our Experience
Formula Student UK, 2012 :
RFR represented IIT-M for the first time in 2012 at the Silverstone circuit, UK. As a 1st year team, we failed to clear
scrutineering and participated in solely the static events. Inspite of this setback, we notched up a respectable score
and ranking, receiving commendations from the judges on the technical design and knowledge that we exhibited.
This experience served as an inspiration in the efforts that were to follow in the following year.
Formula Student Germany, 2013:
Raftar Formula Racing competed at the most prestigious Formula Student Event – the Formula Student Germany
conducted at the Hockenheimring Circuit. Raftar Formula Racing successfully cleared all Scrutineering tests this year,
becoming the only second year team from India to accomplish this feat. RFR-13 went on to compete in the Autocross
and Endurance events. Having gone a step further this year, the team is now hungry to prove itself at the international
stage and leave our mark amongst the best from around the world.
 Formula Student Germany, 2014:
Raftar Formula Racing successfully cleared the "Complete world" registration quiz by battling it out against 202
universities from all the continents and 38 different countries to take a starting spot at the renowned Formula one
circuit at Hockenheimring. Fitted with a single-cylinder Honda CBR250R engine, we targeted excellent drivability and
a competitive fuel economy. We worked to further enhance vehicle dynamics through a smaller wheelbase and a
shift to 10” rims. Composite technology allowed us to use carbon fibre for an extremely ergonomic cockpit and a
lighter streamlined bodyworks. Team is set to outdo its previous performance and attain the targets set for this year.
